The Problem with Pride

Bible in a Year:

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 16:18

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Proverbs 16:16–2

People who achieve an extraordinary level of fame or reputation while they are still alive are often called “a legend in their own time.” A friend who played professional baseball says he met many people in the world of sports who were only “a legend in their own mind.” Pride has a way of distorting how we see ourselves while humility offers a realistic perspective.

The writer of Proverbs said, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (16:18). Viewing ourselves in the mirror of self-importance reflects a distorted image. Self-elevation positions us for a fall.

The antidote to the poison of arrogance is true humility that comes from God. “Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud” (v. 19).

Jesus told His disciples, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:26–28).

There is nothing wrong with receiving accolades for achievement and success. The challenge is to stay focused on the One who calls us to follow Him saying, “for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (11:29).

Lord Jesus, give us Your humility as we interact with others today. May we honour You in all we do and say.

If I have feet and no shoes

No gloves for my hand

No feelings of satiety

With my toes in the sand

.

Castles without servants

No mansions to call home

Purpose remains unfulfilled

In the world as I roam

.

Near and further yon

Seeking solace in the hills

For there in lies my help

For there in do I feel

.

Safe from all harm

Sheltered from the storm

There in lies my strength

From there I move on

.

To more adventures in the Spirit

For in God there’s never few

But just like his mercy,

Each day is brand new

Just Do EMU!

Flower Roberts's avatarSeizure Mama and Rose

(Re-posted Chapter 28: The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit)

It was past time to put all the cards on the table. We needed answers about where these seizures were coming from, why they were occurring, and what triggers were unleashing them in her brain. It seemed we had been trying to put together a puzzle without looking at the picture on the box. Would a stay at an EMU finally reveal the whole picture? Could we handle the whole picture when we got it?
Would this epilepsy monitoring unit give us the answers we needed? Would the electrodes finally locate the source of these electrical storms inside Rose’s brain? I felt like these hundreds of seizures were clearing pathways through Rose’s brain, so that the seizures could go farther and faster, like there was some kind of cumulative effect.
I was truly afraid of weaning her off her medications. Would these seizures…

You know what! I am in debt of past trail.

Everything I wanted was to improve my being in a more sophisticated way. No one is currently available to meet the new horizon of beginning. The sudden outflow of words finds its end in the hush of the new address. The longer it notices the flow, the further it goes to give them peace. The new words have successfully replaced the old, but it’s still present in the amalgamation of different memories. The thousand shades will not help you hide the truth until you come out of the dark and see the light following you. The truth is right behind you. Why can’t you see it? Lose yourself in love with the new blue light!

Goodbye, dear.
