We Can Be Heroes

SARI’S AND BEGGARS

When I travelled to India, many years ago, I found myself in a squalid, forsaken world. Traffic sped by perilously. They were too fast to be safe, but too slow to get anywhere.

It was gut wrenching to see neglected, grubby children laying on the ground at my feet. They were everywhere. Mounds of bedding, people rolled up inside, sleeping through it all, the sounds, the smells. The place seemed to swallow people up. I was stifled by the heat and choking on the smog. And there I was in the middle of a nation of multi coloured sari’s and dirty, crippled beggars.

I LEFT MY HEART IN INDIA

Dalits (Untouchables) are trapped into fixed social orders, from which it’s impossible to escape.

Many upper-caste Indians simply walk past the starving and sick Dalits.

As alien as this land is, travellers cannot help, but fall in…

LIVING IN THE LOVE OF THE COMMON PEOPLE

It’s been recorded that Mother Mary Teresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.) was Baptised on this day 26th August (1910) and considered this her ‘true birthday’ She was born in North Macedonia. Her work is recognised throughout the world.

SAINT IN THE GUTTER AND SAINT IN HEAVEN.

Mother Teresa was born for a purpose and was blessed with the power to achieve it. One of the worlds greatest humanitarians with an almighty vision.

CALLING

In 1946 she received the “call within a call”, to care for the sick and the poorest of the poor. She then moved into the slums of Calcutta, India, dedicated to serving ‘the most vulnerable caste’, “The untouchable people”…

Do you want to release self-doubt?

Do you want to release self-doubt?

Encouraging Grace~ Kate Hufstetler's avatar

I recently read a blog post about self-doubt. In it the author said he suffers from doubting himself and was wondering where he might find help.

We as Christians need look no further than our Bibles.

The Bible has many quotes that will help us in a time of self-doubt. We need only repeat them and have faith that God means what HE says. We can turn to stories of faith. Those are good as well. But sometimes we need a mantra to keep our minds quiet.

So to the guy that needed somewhere to turn, in order to calm his mind…here you go. (And for us too!)

Hebrews 13:6

So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”

Jeremiah 17:7

But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.

Light of the World

One of my favourite Salvation Army Band pieces is called ‘The Light of the World’ written and composed by Dean Goffin who I believe was Australian. I suppose one of the reasons I like this piece is the main hymn/theme going through it which is O Jesus, thou art standing. You will also hear the chorus Behold me standing at the door come in through the piece and if you listen carefully you will hear the bottom end of the band emphasise the knocking.

Holmun Hunt also painted a picture of Jesus sanding outside a door knocking and I believe this can be seen in St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

O Jesus, thou art standing,
outside the fast closed door,
in lowly patience waiting
to pass the threshold o’er:
shame on us, Christian brothers,
his Name and sign who bear,
O shame, thrice shame upon us,
to keep him standing there!

O Jesus, thou art knocking;
and lo, that hand is scarred,
and thorns thy brow encircle,
and tears thy face have marred:
O love that passeth knowledge,
so patiently to wait!
O sin that hath no equal,
so fast to bar the gate!

O Jesus, thou art pleading
in accents meek and low,
“I died for you, my children,
and will you treat me so?”
O Lord, with shame and sorrow
we open now the door;
dear Saviour, enter, enter,
and leave us never more.

The Love of Money

Leigh's avatarAll You Need is Jesus

Money….it’s the root of all sorts of evil….

Hmmm….no, not exactly.

But it’s in the Bible, you say. And if it’s in the Bible then it’s true!

Well…not so fast. You skipped a word when reading the verse in 1 Timothy 6:10. It is the LOVE of money that is the root of all evil.

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

1 Timothy 6:10

We’d all like to have more money. It’s how we survive in this world, right? We need money to buy groceries, to pay rent, to pay, ugh, bills…

When we start obsessing about money is when we have turned that money into a god.

I’m afraid I may have turned it into a god these past several months. I temporarily lost my…
