Benefits cuts are imminent

Those with “milder mental health” issues and “lower-level physical conditions” could see their disability benefits cut, as the government looks to shave £6bn off the welfare bill.

  1. As someone who believes in Regan-era Republicanism but left the GOP in 2016 as a never-Trumper; I don’t understand why the current administration’s effort to save money through budget cuts is being accompanied by a spending increase that will notably add to our growing government deficit.

While I don’t approve of the broad cuts that have been made and the wholesale termination of agencies which strikes me as executive overreach because layoffs may only be authorized through Congress and/or the cabinet leaders of the agencies or departments in question; it makes no sense to make these cuts while increasing Federal spending.

It also bothers me that our MAGA dominated Congress has largely not stepped up to the plate to protest the intrusion into what should be legislative authority. Take Trump’s tariffs for example. Donald Trump should only be able to levy tariffs in the event of a national security issue. This completely unnecessary trade war with Canada, Mexico, and the EU is already hurting us and Congress should be protesting that the levying of taxes is their responsibility.

As someone who graduated from the Wharton School of Business, I don’t understand why Donald Trump appears to believe that foreign governments pay tariffs.

Whereas Donald Trump had some responsible adults minding him during his first term, these adults have all been replaced by fawning enablers who are letting him say and do whatever he wants. I mean, really … he wants Canada as our 51st state? He wants to purchase Greenland from Denmark? He wants to resume control of the Panama Canal? This is unhinged crazy talk.

      1. Whoops – I beg your pardon. I saw benefit cuts which is what the Trump administration has already forced through in terms of Medicare funding cutbacks. Although the head of social security wants our social security elminated in much the same way that the Federal Department of Education is also being eliminated, social security payments remain as yet, untouched.

Social security provides retirment benefits that are calculated as a percentage of lifetime earnings. A surprising number of seniors have no other retirement than social security.
