Psalm 71

1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;
    let me never be put to shame.
2 In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
    turn your ear to me and save me.
3 Be my rock of refuge,
    to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
    for you are my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
    from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.

5 For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord,
    my confidence since my youth.
6 From my birth I have relied on you;
    you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.

Lord, you vowed that when I woke tomorrow

I would see amazing things unfold,

Yet my eyes are misted up with sorrow

And the sights I see are dark and cold.

Lord, you said that my imagination,

Couldn’t contemplate what was to be,

That my wildest dreams could never fashion

All your spirit had in store for me.

Where are all those promises so precious?

Where’s the Father’s strong protective hand?

Where’s the ever-present love of Jesus?

Where’s the grace in which I hoped to stand?

Where’s the Lord who said he’d never leave me?

Where’s the Spirit that he said he’d send?

Where’s the freedom that he said he’d give me?

Where’s the God who said he’d be my friend?

Precious child I’m standing right beside you,

And in love I’m holding out my hand.

There are things your spirit must attend to

If in grace and power you want to stand.

I can dry your bitter tears of sorrow,

In your life my hopes and dreams display

But if you would see great things tomorrow,

You must consecrate yourself today.

That surpasses human warmth,

In the family of Jesus

Everyone can find their worth.

Here the silent unconnected

Find a melody and song,

Here the lonely and neglected

Find a place where they belong.

Lord in you we find such friendship

That surpasses human ties.

There’s a deep and sacred union

Held by love that never dies.

Harmony that’s born in heaven

Lives on earth in you and me

As we share the love of Jesus

In our Father’s family.

Instructions for Christian Households

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. How we all need to spend time being quiet and still in the Lord’s presence! This beautiful devotional song was written in 1920 by Albert Orsborn, the Salvation Army’s “Poet General”. He had been asked to write a song for a series of officers’ councils, but only made a start after the first session! For such a prolific hymnwriter, apparently the task would not be difficult! Orsborn is quoted as saying: “At about 5:30 (in the morning) I awoke with a very real sense of a Presence quite near me. Then slowly, but easily, these verses and the chorus came into my mind. All I had to do was to catch the inspiration and write down the words…by candlelight.” The song was used that evening but not published until 1923.

Psalm 146

1 Praise the Lord.[a]

Praise the Lord, my soul.

2 I will praise the Lord all my life;

Closing Appeal for Steadfastness and Unity

4 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!

2 I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. 3 Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Final Exhortations

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Whilst Sharing this reading with you I am reminded in verses 4 – 7 that thanksgiving in the USA is coming to an end, a time where the American’s give thanks for the harvest i’m told.

We must remember though that giving thanks to God doesn’t just apply to a certain time of the year, it applies all the year round. So today if you have something to thank God for, no matter what it is THANK HIM!
